&#;Not That bad&#; a conversation between brothers

Brothers,

I just finished reading &#;not that bad&#;, a collection of essays on &#;rape culture&#; edited by roxane gay.  very heavy read.  i found it on my bookshelf, a remnant of my most essential relationship.  it called to me prefer every book i&#;ve read for the past three months.  i opened it not knowing/fully knowing what the pages would detail: dozens of women, hundreds of pages, thousands of words, untold hours and days and months and years of horror&#;mostly at the hands of men.  it was all very, very very heavy: to walk in their shoes down dark streets, down daylight streets, in office buildings, in their homes and bedrooms, at parties, with their families, followed by heckles, and grabbing hands, and strangers, and friends and lovers, and fathers.  a book filled with survivors of daily horror, yo.  enjoy, how does one retain any semblance of sane?

Three years ago, about a dozen gay Inky men got together for a home-cooked New Year’s Eve dinner. They were professional men, retirees and artists who felt the need to have activities that celebrate their unique heritage and to be in more spaces where they were not the only non-white person or couple in the room.

Over champagne and dessert, the nucleus of what is now Brothers of the Desert emerged.

A lot has happened since that dinner party in the early hours of The organization has established itself as a nonprofit corporation, hosted two men’s wellness seminars, participated in marches and protests and held two gala fundraising dinners. Even during the pandemic, it continues to have several well-attended online events each month, such as interactive discussions, talent shows, wine tasting from a Black-owned vineyard and films by gay Black directors. It also serves as a public voice for the community through media appearances and collaborations with LGBT, Black and non-Black organizations.
