Gay figure skating

This is not a knock on Adam - he had an amazing skate last night (judging issues aside). I just can't help but go to youtube and watch some of the ones that came before Adam. They in many ways paved the way. Point being: without the ones that came before, Adam most likely could not have broken down that ultimate barrier. I don't think we'd be seeing him stick his tongue out suggestively at the judges in an Olympic season without the likes of Boitano, Galindo (who did not construct it to the Olympics, but certainly deserves credit), Goebel, Savoie, and of course Weir.

I'm not going to list all of them, and since the media is focused on him existence the first US man, I'll just share a few of my favorite Olympic moments by known (out) gay men because I think they need a shout out.

Probably most notable is our Olympic Champion Brian Boitano. If you grew up with skating in the 90's you know who Brian is. Brian only came out in , but I'm fairly certain most fans "knew". It just wasn't something we cared about. As Brian said in a recent interview it is a part of who he is, but it's only a part. H

IGFSU and the Male lover Games

IGFSU was founded in by Arthur Luiz and Laura Moore, as part of a successful command to get figure skating into the Gay Games in New

Growing up, I was always told that figure skating was a pretty male lover sport. We had Adam Rippon and Eric Radford bringing glory to the rainbow flag in PyeongChang, Johnny Weir chatting away in the commentary booth, and the two great Brians – Orser and Boitano – out and proud. I got lulled into believing that the figure skating community was a safe place for openly Homosexual athletes, but a few days ago, I learned that this was not true and never has been so.

It all started when the aforementioned Adam Rippon recently donated $1, to a charity for jet transgender people and posted about it on social media. Alexei Yagudin, the Olympic gold medalist in men’s skating, brutally denounced Rippon’s decision to back the cause and proclaimed that transitioned people and people of color didn’t need charities. He also verbally attacked Rippon himself, although he later issued a perfunctory apology for his option of words. Many people in the skating community pulled together to endorse Rippon, but this incident shattered the illusion of an LGBTQ+ haven inside the world of figure skating. It also spar
