Gay peloton trainers

In May , I wrote a film questioning why, among the more than male cyclists employed on UCI professional teams, not a single one was openly gay or bisexual.

Just weeks earlier, pro BMX rider Corey Walsh had come out as gay, and by October, Australian footballer Josh Cavallo had become the world's first openly lgbtq+ male professional footballer. The following year, Britain saw its own breakthrough when Blackpool FC's Jake Daniels came out. If even football could open up and accept lgbtq+ players, surely it was only a matter of second for cycling. Yet here we are four years later and, in male professional road cycling, representation remains stuck at zero.

It is statistically almost unfeasible that there are no gay pros. The latest sexual orientation data from the ONS point out that % of people aged , and % of those aged , identify as dyke, gay or bi-curious. If we put on a conservative estimate of 6% for pro cyclists - most of whom fall within the above age range - at least 50 male pros are gay or bi. Yet not one has revealed it publicly.

GREG IN HOLLYWOOD

Dancing With the Stars has not been very LGBT inclusive in its history. There&#;s been a Lance Bass here, a Chaz Bono there and a Martina Navratilova. But the show, which has never chosen Greg Louganis, is far more eager for the Bristol Palin types such as this season&#;s selection Olivia Jade.

I stopped watching years ago.

But I will build mention that out Peloton instructor Cody Rigsby will be one of the contestants vying for the coveted mirror ball trophy.

He tells Good Morning America: “In my former life before fitness I was a professional dancer. I danced for Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, so she’s used to busting a move.” The life still presents some challenges, however, even for one of Peloton’s top instructors. “I’m definitely using muscles I haven’t used in a while because I’m dusting off those dancing shoes,” he added. “But I’ve built up the endurance on Peloton in my cycling classes so I’m ready.”

Cody Rigsby and self love

So earlier tonight I completed my 91st Peloton trek—a minute pop cruise with an instructor named Cody Rigsby.

The experience got me to thinking of my boyhood in Mahopac, N.Y., and s rural perceptions of homosexuality.

Or, put different: When I grew up, you couldn&#;t be gay.

Which sounds weird, right? One doesn&#;t decide to be or not to be gay. You are or you&#;re not. Period.

And yet, it wasn&#;t really an option. In my turf (and in many turfs across America), being male lover was being a fudge packer. A homo. A queer. It was an easy insult—&#;What are you, a fag?&#; and &#;You gonna go to prison and find some soap on a rope?&#; It meant you were soft. A sissy. A guy who missed a big tackle for the football team? Lgbtq+. A boy who liked ballet? Gay. On and on it went. And while I didn&#;t use the words as slang, I certainly never spoke up to protest; certainly never felt compelled to show those who actually were gay (and closeted) that it wasn&#;t OK.

Truth be told, I think people were simply afraid of the unknown. I remember the ancient debate about gay mar
