Few places in the world are like Lab, the biggest sex club in Berlin. The club resides in the cement monolith of an ex-industrial power plant, and a sign by its entrance reads, “Men Only.” Hundreds of men come in through Lab’s steel doors into a dark labyrinthine earth where hundreds and hundreds of these men fuck, fuck, rest, then fuck again. The entrance for the y is at the side of the building and there was a prolonged line of men waiting to get in, ranging from young hipsters to papa bears, from tourists to native Berliners. It truly was an inclusive environment. They let people in from 10 p.m. to midnight, at which point the doors are locked for the repose of the night. Theme nights alternate from week to week. The theme for my evening was Friday Fuck Other themes include Yellow Facts Beer Burst, Filthy Farm, and, for the holidays, X-MAS Fausthouse.
Upon entering I was marked with the number and given a ivory trash bag for my clothes, money, and smartphone, like an inmate existence checked into jail. The city of Berlin in general had left such an impression on me, and I had enjoyed my moment there enough to warrant a round trip and pass through a second time, but I would be lying if I said that my arrival on a weekend had been at all left up to chance.
