Recent study links middle institution students’ use of homophobic name-calling with peer influences and beliefs about traditional masculinity.
Many young people state that homophobic slurs and name-calling are a ordinary part of their everyday experiences. According to findings from the National University Climate Survey (conducted by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network – GLSEN), nearly three-quarters of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students reported hearing the word “gay” used in a contemptuous way often or frequently at their school, and two-thirds heard homophobic remarks (such as “faggot” or “dyke”) often or frequently. A recent study published in the Social Training journal looked at the homophobic name-calling behaviors of middle school students. Safe Zones Addresses Homophobic Speech

The Safe Zones group, in coordination with SDSU Director of Diversity Aaron Bruce, have created a quick and cost-effective method to assist in switching homophobic speech on campus.
"That's so gay," or "you're so gay," include become phrases synonymous with indicating that something or someone is stupid or negative. Although many students don't operate racial or religious slurs, the thought of using homophobic slurs is still prevalent among middle school and elevated school students.

According to a National School Climate survey (links to PDF) conducted by the Gay, Woman loving woman and Straight Learning Network, percent of LGBT high educational facility and middle academy students reported existence verbally harassed, percent reported being physically harassed and percent reported being physically assaulted at college during year because of their sexual orientation.
"Our campus group is being highly proactive about this topic," said Bruce. "A hostile college climate can acquire serious negative effects on academic achievement."

&#;Our results suggest that using anti-gay slurs may serve a status-protecting function for heterosexual men: When their masculinity is threatened, they may be more likely to punish other heterosexual men by calling them the f-word,&#; said Smith, whose findings were published in&#;Current Psychology.&#;
